About the course

Build Practical Knowledge for IAA Level 1 Work

This instructor-led programme helps you understand how UK immigration law works in practice — not simply memorise visa rules.

You will work through the core Level 1 syllabus, learn how to navigate the Immigration Rules and official guidance, and develop a structured approach to analysing eligibility, evidence and client circumstances.

The course also develops legal-research habits and awareness of professional boundaries so you can recognise when a matter requires further or specialist advice.

Quick answer

The course is designed for aspiring immigration advisers, caseworkers, legal support staff, career changers and professionals who want a structured foundation in UK immigration law.

Important: completing training does not itself grant IAA authorisation to provide regulated immigration advice.

Why this course?

Why take instructor-led IAA Level 1 training?

The programme is built for learners who want structure, live explanation and the opportunity to understand how legal rules translate into real client situations.

01

Learn in a logical sequence

Work through the Level 1 knowledge areas over 15 weeks rather than trying to absorb a large volume of immigration law in a short intensive course.

02

Learn from a practitioner

Hear how the Immigration Rules, evidence requirements, client care and regulatory boundaries operate in practical immigration work.

03

Ask questions live

Use the live teaching environment to clarify concepts, discuss examples and resolve misunderstandings as your knowledge develops.

04

Develop legal research skills

Learn how to find and use the current Immigration Rules, official guidance and relevant resources rather than relying on outdated summaries.

05

Understand professional boundaries

Develop awareness of ethics, adviser responsibilities and the importance of recognising when a matter requires escalation or specialist input.

06

Build a base for assessment preparation

Strengthen the underlying legal knowledge you will need before moving into dedicated MCQ practice, timed revision or exam-intensive preparation.

How the course works

Course format and what to expect

How much preparation is required?

Plan for independent study between live sessions. You should complete any assigned pre-reading, review the relevant legal materials and come prepared to discuss the topics being taught. Learners with less immigration-law experience may need additional study time.

What is expected during live sessions?

Join on time, engage with the trainer, ask questions and take part in discussions and practical exercises. Active participation will help you test your understanding and identify areas that need further study.

How is the course delivered?

The programme is delivered live online across 15 weeks. Joining information and course materials are provided electronically, allowing learners in the UK and overseas to participate without travelling to a classroom.

What happens after I book?

You will receive booking confirmation and payment acknowledgement, followed by learner onboarding information, the course timetable, joining instructions and access to relevant course materials before the programme begins.

Practitioner-led learning

Who will my course tutor be?

Experienced UK immigration practitioner and trainer

The programme is led by an experienced IAA-registered immigration adviser with practical casework knowledge. Teaching is focused on understanding the law, applying rules to realistic situations and developing professional judgement rather than simply learning answers by rote.

Important distinction

Does this course include IAA Level 1 exam practice?

No — dedicated exam practice is sold separately. This 15-week programme is primarily a substantive immigration-law training course. If you want focused MCQ practice, timed revision or exam-intensive preparation, choose one of our separate exam-preparation products.

Before you enrol

IAA Level 1 Registration & Assessment: What Learners Should Know

Training is one part of becoming authorised; the IAA sets the registration, experience and competence-assessment requirements.

Experience normally expected

Current IAA guidance says Level 1 advisers should normally have at least three months' full-time (or equivalent part-time) UK immigration advice/services experience, or six months' full-time (or equivalent part-time) non-immigration advice-giving experience, alongside up-to-date immigration-law training.

Assessment format

The current Level 1 competence assessment has two sections: 20 multiple-choice questions and scenario-based questions requiring written answers. Both sections must be passed.

Pass mark and attempt

The current Level 1 pass mark is 60%. The IAA allows one competence-assessment attempt per application, so candidates should prepare thoroughly before submitting an application for registration.

Online assessment

IAA competence assessments are currently conducted online. The Level 1 immigration paper is timed and the regulator provides onboarding and assessment instructions directly to eligible applicants.

Regulatory note: Immigration Visa Expert is an independent training provider. The Immigration Advice Authority controls adviser and organisation registration, competence assessments, assessment dates and formal authorisation. Always check current IAA guidance before relying on registration or assessment information.
Use the latest official guidance: see the IAA adviser registration guidance, Level 1 syllabus and Level 1 exam resource book.
