Overview

What is a Permitted Paid Engagement Visit Visa?

A Permitted Paid Engagement, often called PPE, is a visitor route for experts who are invited to the UK for a specific paid engagement or event. It is not a general work visa and it cannot be used for ongoing UK employment or freelance work.

The applicant must be 18 or over, have a written invitation from a UK-based organisation or client, and show that the engagement is relevant to their expertise, qualifications and main job overseas.

The visitor may stay in the UK for up to 6 months, but the paid engagement itself must take place within the first month of arrival. Evidence must show both the professional status and the exact nature of the paid activity.

Latest position

What are the current visitor visa rules and fees?

PPE is now within Standard Visitor

The route is handled as a Standard Visitor activity, but the paid engagement rules are specific and should be evidenced carefully.

First-month rule

The paid engagement must be completed within the first month after arrival, even though the visitor may be granted up to 6 months.

Current visitor fee

The current short-term Standard Visitor visa fee is £135. An ETA may apply for some non-visa nationals.

No general work permission

The route does not permit wider UK employment, ongoing services or self-employment beyond the permitted paid engagement.

Invitation

A written invitation from a UK-based organisation or client is required.

Timing

The paid engagement must take place within the first month of arrival.

Stay length

Permission can be granted for up to 6 months as a visitor.

The engagement must connect directly to the applicant’s expertise and main profession overseas.

Eligibility

Who can qualify for a Permitted Paid Engagement visit?

The route is suitable for applicants who are established in their profession and have been invited to the UK for a specific paid engagement. Eligible examples can include professional artists, entertainers, musicians, sportspersons, qualified lawyers, lecturers, conference speakers, academic examiners or assessors, and air pilot examiners.

The invitation must come from an appropriate UK-based organisation, client, agent, agency, broadcaster, sports organisation, academic institution, conference organiser or other suitable host depending on the profession and event.

The applicant must still meet the genuine visitor requirements. This means they must show they will leave the UK after the visit, have enough funds for the trip, and will not use the route to do broader UK work.

Permitted activities

What paid engagement activities can be allowed?

Professional and creative engagements

Artists, entertainers or musicians may be paid for activities directly linked to their profession, such as performing, speaking, presenting work, judging panels or attending professional events.

Sport, legal and academic roles

Professional sportspersons, qualified lawyers, lecturers, conference speakers and academic assessors may qualify where the engagement fits the rules and evidence is strong.

Strict boundary

The route is not for taking a UK job, filling a role for a UK employer, delivering ongoing services or doing paid activity outside the permitted engagement.

Documents

What documents are usually important for Paid Engagement Visit Visa?

The evidence should be tailored to the applicant’s purpose of visit, funds, sponsor support, travel history and reasons to return home. A strong application explains the visit clearly rather than relying on a long but unfocused document bundle.

Invitation evidence

A clear invitation letter confirming the host, event, dates, payment, activity and why the applicant has been invited.

Expert evidence

Professional profile, publications, awards, media coverage, practising certificate, performance history or other profession-specific evidence.

Visitor evidence

Funds, accommodation, travel purpose, overseas employment or business evidence, and reasons to return home.

Request a visitor visa document review

We can review your visitor evidence before the application is prepared and help identify gaps, contradictions and refusal risks.

Fees

How much does Paid Engagement Visit Visa cost?

6-month visitor visa

£135

Used for most permitted paid engagement visits.

ETA where applicable

£20

For certain non-visa nationals where an ETA is required instead of a visitor visa.

Long-term visitor visa

£506 / £903 / £1,128

Long-term visas exist, but a PPE must still be pre-arranged and completed in the first month of the relevant visit.

Visitor extension

£1,172

Only relevant in limited visitor circumstances and not a route to ongoing paid work.

Super priority service

£1,000

May be available in some locations or circumstances as an optional faster decision service.

Extension

Can this visitor visa be extended?

A PPE visitor is normally expected to complete the paid engagement within the first month and leave within the permitted visitor period. The route is not designed for extension to continue paid work.

Visitor extension is only available in limited circumstances, usually to bring a shorter period of visitor permission up to 6 months, and the current extension fee is £1,172.

Settlement

Does this visitor route lead to ILR or settlement?

A Permitted Paid Engagement visit does not lead to settlement, ILR or British citizenship.

If the UK activity is broader than a short permitted engagement, another route such as a sponsored work visa, creative worker route or business mobility route may need to be considered.
