Overview
What is the Short Term Study Visa UK?
The Short Term Study Visa is for applicants aged 16 or over who want to come to the UK to study an English language course for more than 6 months and up to 11 months. It is not a general study visa for any course, and it is not suitable for applicants who want to study a degree, vocational programme, school course, mixed-subject course or a longer English course.
This route is usually most relevant to international students who have been accepted by an accredited English language provider and need immigration permission for a focused English language course. The applicant must apply before travelling to the UK and must show that the course, funds, accommodation, travel arrangements and intention to leave are credible.
At Access Global, we help applicants and parents understand whether this route is suitable, whether the course fits the rules, how strong the financial evidence is, and whether the application carries refusal risks because of travel history, funds, previous refusals, weak ties or unclear study intention.
Key facts
Short Term Study Visa UK: key points before you apply
Eligibility
Who can apply for a Short Term Study Visa?
You must be at least 16 years old on the date of application and must apply from outside the UK. The route is for English language study only. The course must last more than 6 months and no more than 11 months, and the provider must be appropriately accredited.
You must be able to support and accommodate yourself without working or relying on public funds. You must also have enough money to pay for your return or onward journey, and either have paid your course fees or hold enough funds to pay them.
Applicants aged 16 or 17 must also show suitable travel, reception and care arrangements in the UK and written consent from parents or a legal guardian. These cases need careful preparation because the application is assessed not only on the course and funds, but also on safeguarding and living arrangements.
Financial position
What are the 2025 and 2026 financial evidence rules for a Short Term Study Visa?
There is no fixed monthly maintenance figure for this route in the same way as some longer study routes. Instead, the applicant must show enough money to cover accommodation and living costs, pay the course fees if they have not already been paid, and pay for return or onward travel.
Funds must be genuinely available for the study plan. Bank statements, payslips, course-fee evidence, sponsor support, accommodation details and family support evidence may all need to be consistent with the applicant’s personal and financial circumstances.
A weak financial explanation is one of the common refusal risks. We can review whether the funds, course fees, sponsor support and travel plans are presented clearly before the application is submitted.
2025/2026 financial evidence position
There is no fixed monthly maintenance amount for this route. The applicant must show enough genuinely available funds for living costs, accommodation, course fees where unpaid, and return or onward travel. Evidence should be clear, recent and consistent with the applicant’s wider financial circumstances.
Course
What type of English course qualifies for a Short Term Study Visa?
The course must be an English language course only. It must not include other subjects. If the course is 6 months or shorter, a visitor route may be more suitable. If the course is longer than 11 months, or if the applicant wants to study another type of course, another study route may need to be considered.
The education provider must be an accredited institution. This can include a licensed student sponsor or an institution accredited by an accepted education inspection or accreditation body. An overseas higher education provider may also be relevant where the UK study forms part of an overseas programme and the provider meets the route requirements.
The course acceptance letter should normally confirm the course name, duration, cost, provider details and any accommodation included. We can review the course evidence and identify gaps before the application is prepared.
Documents
What documents should be reviewed before a Short Term Study Visa application?
A strong application normally needs a clear evidence bundle covering identity, English language course acceptance, course fees, financial support, accommodation, travel plans, immigration history and, where relevant, TB testing or parental consent.
The exact document position depends on the applicant’s age, nationality, country of residence, course provider, course fee position, accommodation arrangements, financial sponsor and previous travel history. Instead of simply collecting a long list of papers, the evidence should answer the key questions: why this course, why now, how it is funded, where the applicant will stay, and why the applicant will leave at the end of the course.
At Access Global, we can provide a document-check service to review whether the evidence is clear, consistent and suitable for the route before the application is submitted.
Course evidence
Acceptance evidence should clearly confirm the English course, provider, dates and fees.
Financial position
Funds, course fees, support and travel plans should be clear and consistent.
Personal circumstances
Age, travel history, accommodation, TB or parental consent issues should be addressed where relevant.
Document check
Need your Short Term Study Visa documents reviewed?
We can review your course letter, financial evidence, accommodation plans, travel intention and under-18 evidence before you submit your application.
Under 18
What extra issues apply if the applicant is 16 or 17?
Applicants aged 16 or 17 can apply, but the case must include appropriate parental or guardian consent and clear arrangements for travel, reception, accommodation and care in the UK.
If the young person is travelling alone or with an adult who is not a parent or legal guardian, the application should clearly explain who will meet them, where they will stay, who will look after them, and how the arrangement has been agreed. Where the student will be cared for by someone who is not a close relative for more than 28 days, additional safeguarding considerations may arise.
We can help parents and guardians prepare a clear evidence strategy so the visa application explains the study plan and care arrangements properly.
Fees
How much does a Short Term Study Visa cost?
The current application fee is £228. Applicants must also usually pay the immigration health surcharge, which is currently usually £776 for this route. Biometric appointment or optional priority-service costs may apply depending on location and service availability.
The applicant should also budget for course fees, accommodation, living costs, travel costs, translations, TB testing where required and any additional evidence needed to support the application.
Fees can change, so costs should be checked close to the date of application. We can help calculate the likely total cost and identify whether the evidence matches the applicant’s financial position.
Restrictions
What can you not do on a Short Term Study Visa?
This visa does not allow work, business activity, self-employment, work placements or unpaid work experience. The applicant must study only the English language course for which the visa was granted and must not use the route to make the UK their main home through repeated or long visits.
Family members cannot come as dependants under this route. Any accompanying family member must consider their own separate immigration position.
The applicant must leave within the permitted time, usually within 30 days of the course ending or before the end of the maximum 11-month stay, whichever is sooner.
Extension
Can a Short Term Study Visa be extended or switched inside the UK?
No. This route cannot be extended from inside the UK and it does not allow switching into another route from within the UK. A person who needs a longer course, a different course or a longer-term study plan should consider the correct route before travelling.
If your study plan may change, it is better to take advice early. Choosing the wrong route can create timing problems, extra cost and refusal risk later.
ILR
Does a Short Term Study Visa lead to ILR or settlement?
The Short Term Study Visa is temporary and does not lead directly to indefinite leave to remain. It is designed for a short English language course and not for long-term residence.
Applicants who want a longer UK immigration pathway should consider their future options before applying, such as the Student Visa, Graduate Visa, Skilled Worker Visa, family routes or other eligible routes depending on their circumstances.
Refusal risks
Why are Short Term Study Visa applications refused?
Common issues include weak financial evidence, unclear source of funds, vague accommodation plans, weak ties to the country of residence, previous UK immigration problems, unclear study intention, course-provider concerns, or a study plan that does not match the applicant’s background.
A refusal can affect future applications, so the safest approach is to review the facts, funds, course evidence and travel history before submitting the application. We can help identify weak points and prepare a stronger explanation where the facts need careful presentation.
