Overview
What is the UK Religious Worker Visa?
The UK Religious Worker Visa is a Temporary Work route for adults who have been sponsored to carry out religious work in a non-pastoral role, or to work within a religious order, for a temporary period in the UK. It is not designed for ministers of religion who will lead congregations, preach as a core role or perform senior pastoral duties; those cases usually need to be assessed against the Minister of Religion route instead.
This route can be suitable for religious workers, visiting religious workers and members of religious orders where the UK role is connected to the sponsor’s religious organisation and the sponsor has issued a valid Certificate of Sponsorship. The visa can allow work for the sponsoring organisation, limited supplementary work, study where permitted, and eligible dependant applications.
A successful Religious Worker Visa application depends on more than having a religious role. The Certificate of Sponsorship, job description, sponsor licence position, previous UK immigration history, maintenance evidence, dependant evidence and route conditions all need to be reviewed together before submission.

Eligibility
Who can apply for a UK Religious Worker Visa?
The applicant must be aged 18 or over, have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship, be carrying out eligible religious work, meet the financial requirement where required, and satisfy the route conditions. The job must relate to the sponsor organisation’s work and must follow UK wage and working-hour rules.
Sponsored religious work
The role must be religious work connected to the sponsor’s organisation. The route is aimed at non-pastoral religious work and religious-order roles rather than senior pastoral leadership.
Age and permission history
The applicant must be 18 or over. A previous Religious Worker or Charity Worker grant in the last 12 months can create a risk unless the applicant was outside the UK for that period.
Valid Certificate of Sponsorship
The certificate must be assigned by an eligible sponsor, match the role and working pattern, and remain valid when the application is submitted.
Financial evidence
The main applicant normally needs to meet the £1,270 maintenance requirement unless they qualify for an exemption or the sponsor certifies support for the first month.
2025/2026 financial position for Religious Worker Visa applicationsThe current maintenance position is that the main applicant usually needs £1,270 available for at least 28 consecutive days, with day 28 falling within 31 days of the application date. This can be avoided where the applicant has already held valid UK permission for at least 12 months, or where the sponsor certifies maintenance on the Certificate of Sponsorship. Dependants have separate maintenance amounts: £285 for a partner, £315 for one child and £200 for each additional child, unless an exemption or sponsor-certified support applies. The application fee is currently £340 per applicant and the Immigration Health Surcharge is usually payable separately.
Documents
What evidence should be checked before a Religious Worker Visa application?
The document position depends on the sponsor, role, applicant history, country of residence, dependant position and whether maintenance is being certified. A Religious Worker Visa application should not be treated as a simple form-filling exercise because the sponsorship and role evidence must support the correct route.
We keep the document review focused on what matters: whether the Certificate of Sponsorship is suitable, whether the role fits the route, whether financial evidence is needed, whether dependant documents are complete, and whether any translation, TB or previous immigration-history issue needs to be addressed.
Sponsorship and role evidence
Certificate of Sponsorship details, role description, work pattern, sponsor information and evidence that the duties fit the Religious Worker route.
Identity and immigration evidence
Passport, identity documents, previous UK immigration history, current permission if extending, and travel or residence information where relevant.
Financial and family evidence
Maintenance evidence or sponsor-certified support, dependant relationship evidence, TB certificate where required and certified translations where needed.

Dependants
Can a Religious Worker bring family members to the UK?
Eligible partners and children can apply as dependants where they meet the relationship, financial and suitability requirements. Their permission is usually linked to the main applicant’s visa. Family applications should be planned carefully because each dependant must have the correct evidence and the required funds unless an exemption or certified support applies.
Extension
Can a Religious Worker Visa be extended?
A Religious Worker may be able to extend permission if they continue to meet the route requirements, remain sponsored, and apply before current permission expires. The total stay is capped at up to 24 months, or the Certificate of Sponsorship period plus permitted extra days if shorter. A fresh application strategy is also needed where the applicant changes job within the same organisation or moves to a new organisation.
ILR
Does the Religious Worker Visa lead to indefinite leave to remain?
The Religious Worker route is a temporary route and does not directly lead to settlement. Applicants who want a longer-term UK pathway should take advice early on whether a different route may be more suitable, such as Minister of Religion, Skilled Worker or another eligible immigration category.

FAQs
UK Religious Worker Visa FAQs
Who is the UK Religious Worker Visa for?
It is for adults sponsored to do temporary religious work in a non-pastoral role or within a religious order. The role must be linked to the sponsor’s religious organisation and supported by a valid Certificate of Sponsorship.
Is the Religious Worker route the same as the Minister of Religion route?
No. The Religious Worker route is generally for non-pastoral religious work and religious-order roles. Roles involving senior pastoral leadership, preaching or leading a congregation may need to be assessed under the Minister of Religion route.
Do I need a Certificate of Sponsorship?
Yes. The Certificate of Sponsorship is central to the application. It must be valid, accurately describe the role and be issued by a sponsor licensed for this type of work.
How much is the Religious Worker Visa application fee?
The current application fee is £340 for each applicant. The Immigration Health Surcharge and any appointment or document-related costs are separate.
How much maintenance money do I need?
The main applicant usually needs £1,270 available for the required 28-day period unless they have a qualifying exemption or the sponsor certifies maintenance. Dependants may need separate funds.
Can my sponsor certify maintenance?
Yes. If the sponsor confirms maintenance on the Certificate of Sponsorship, the applicant may not need to provide separate bank evidence for the main applicant requirement.
Can I bring my partner and children?
Eligible partners and children can apply as dependants. They need to meet relationship, financial and suitability requirements and their permission will usually be linked to the main applicant’s visa.
How long can I stay on a Religious Worker Visa?
Permission can be granted for up to 24 months, or the Certificate of Sponsorship period plus permitted extra days if shorter.
Can I extend my Religious Worker Visa?
Extension may be possible if the applicant continues to meet the route requirements, but the total stay cannot exceed the route limit.
Does the Religious Worker Visa lead to ILR?
No. This is a temporary work route and does not directly lead to indefinite leave to remain. A different long-term route may be needed if settlement is the objective.
Can I switch into this route from another UK visa?
The route is mainly structured around overseas applications and extensions for existing Religious Worker permission. Switching should be checked carefully before any application strategy is agreed.
Can Access Global check my Religious Worker Visa documents before I apply?
Yes. We can review the sponsorship position, Certificate of Sponsorship details, financial evidence, dependant documents and overall risk profile before submission.
