Overview

What is the Parent of a Child Student Visa?

The Parent of a Child Student Visa allows one parent to live in the UK temporarily to care for a child who has, or is applying for, a Child Student Visa. It is designed for parents of younger children who are studying at an independent school in the UK and need one parent to accompany them during their studies.

This route is narrow and carefully controlled. The child must be aged between 4 and 11 when the parent applies, and the parent must intend to live with the child while in the UK. The visa does not allow the parent to work, study, start a business, claim public funds, or make the UK their main home.

At Access Global Immigration Visa Experts, we help parents understand whether this route is suitable, review the child’s school and visa position, assess financial evidence, and prepare a clear application strategy before submission.

Financial Evidence

What are the 2025 and 2026 maintenance fund rules for Parent of a Child Student applications?

Current 2025/2026 financial requirement

Current rules require the parent to show enough funds for themselves, the Child Student and any other accompanying Child Student siblings, unless an exception applies. If the parent is applying separately and has not already been in the UK with permission for at least 12 months, the standard amount is £1,560 per month of intended stay, up to 9 months. This means a 9-month or longer stay normally requires £14,040 for the parent and the main Child Student.

If another child will accompany the parent and also has, or is applying for, Child Student permission, an additional £625 per month is required for that child, up to 9 months. Required funds must usually be held for 28 days and the parent must also be able to maintain their main home outside the UK. If the parent has already been in the UK with permission for at least 12 months, financial evidence may not be required for an extension.

Eligibility

Who can apply as a Parent of a Child Student?

A successful application depends on the parent, the child, the school placement and the family arrangements. The parent must be at least 18, must be the child’s parent, and must intend to live with the child during the period of permission. The child must be a Child Student or applying as a Child Student at the same time.

The route normally allows only one parent to accompany the child. The other parent must usually remain outside the UK. If parents are separated, divorced, estranged, or if there are unusual care arrangements, the application may need careful evidence explaining who has responsibility for the child and why the applying parent is the appropriate accompanying parent.

The parent must also keep their main home outside the UK and plan to leave when the visa ends. This route is not intended for long-term family settlement or permanent relocation.

Rather than preparing a long generic checklist, we review the family’s exact situation and identify the evidence that matters most: relationship documents, the child’s school and Child Student position, financial evidence, accommodation and care arrangements, the parent’s overseas home, travel history, TB evidence where relevant, and certified translations where required.

Extension

Can a Parent of a Child Student Visa be extended?

A parent may be able to extend this visa from inside the UK if the parent and child continue to meet the requirements. The parent must apply before their current permission expires. The extension normally lasts until the child’s Child Student permission ends or the child turns 12, whichever happens first.

Extension planning should start early because the application may require fresh evidence of the child’s school status, ongoing care arrangements, the parent’s overseas home, funds where required, and compliance with visa conditions. If the child is approaching age 12, the family may need advice on future care and visa planning.

ILR

Does the Parent of a Child Student Visa lead to ILR?

This route does not provide a direct route to indefinite leave to remain. It is a temporary route for one parent to accompany a young Child Student. Time spent on this visa should not be treated as a straightforward settlement route.

Families who may wish to remain in the UK longer term should take advice early. Depending on the facts, future planning may involve the child’s education route, another parent’s immigration route, Skilled Worker options, family routes, private life considerations, or other lawful routes available at the relevant time.
