IAA Level 1 Training & Exam FAQs
Answers to common questions about IAA Level 1 training, the competence assessment and exam preparation.
What is IAA Level 1 training?
IAA Level 1 training helps aspiring immigration advisers build foundational knowledge of UK immigration law and prepare for the Immigration Advice Authority Level 1 competence assessment. Training itself is separate from IAA registration and authorisation.
Who is IAA Level 1 immigration adviser training for?
It is particularly relevant to aspiring immigration advisers, new caseworkers, legal support staff and others who want structured introductory training in immigration law or preparation for the IAA Level 1 assessment.
What does the IAA Level 1 competence assessment include?
The current IAA Level 1 competence assessment has two sections: 20 multiple-choice questions and scenario-based questions requiring written answers. Candidates must pass both sections to pass the assessment overall.
What is the pass mark for the IAA Level 1 exam?
The current pass mark for the IAA Level 1 competence assessment is 60%. Candidates must pass both the multiple-choice and scenario-based sections.
Is the IAA Level 1 assessment online?
Yes. The IAA currently conducts competence assessments online. Assessment arrangements and dates are controlled by the regulator and should always be checked against the latest official IAA guidance.
How can I prepare for the IAA Level 1 exam?
A strong preparation plan should combine study of the current Level 1 syllabus and official resource materials with multiple-choice practice, scenario-based questions, timed revision and familiarity with the assessment format.
Does your IAA Level 1 training include MCQ exam practice?
Immigration Visa Expert offers a dedicated Level 1 MCQ exam-practice product with 500+ practice questions. Instructor-led and short-course options can be selected separately depending on the level of support required.
What is the difference between instructor-led, weekend and one-day IAA Level 1 courses?
The 15-week instructor-led programme provides the most structured ongoing tuition. Weekend training is a shorter concentrated learning option, while the one-day intensive course is primarily positioned for focused revision and exam preparation.
Does passing an IAA Level 1 course make me an authorised immigration adviser?
No. Completing a private training course does not itself provide IAA authorisation. The IAA controls adviser and organisation registration, competence assessments and formal authorisation to provide regulated immigration advice.
What is the IAA Level 1 syllabus?
The official Level 1 syllabus covers areas including immigration law, asylum and protection, nationality, appeals, ethics, and essential skills and abilities. Candidates should use the latest regulator-issued syllabus when preparing for assessment.
