The course is designed with reference to the current IAA Level 1 syllabus and official resources. Immigration law changes frequently, so teaching materials and references should be checked against the law and guidance applicable at the time of delivery.

Course format and what to expect
How much preparation is required?
Plan for independent study between live sessions. You should complete any assigned pre-reading, review the relevant legal materials and come prepared to discuss the topics being taught. Learners with less immigration-law experience may need additional study time.
What is expected during live sessions?
Join on time, engage with the trainer, ask questions and take part in discussions and practical exercises. Active participation will help you test your understanding and identify areas that need further study.
How is the course delivered?
The programme is delivered live online across 15 weeks. Joining information and course materials are provided electronically, allowing learners in the UK and overseas to participate without travelling to a classroom.
What happens after I book?
You will receive booking confirmation and payment acknowledgement, followed by learner onboarding information, the course timetable, joining instructions and access to relevant course materials before the programme begins.

Experienced UK immigration practitioner and trainer
The programme is led by an experienced IAA-registered immigration adviser with practical casework knowledge. Teaching is focused on understanding the law, applying rules to realistic situations and developing professional judgement rather than simply learning answers by rote.
Important distinction
Does this course include IAA Level 1 exam practice?
No — dedicated exam practice is sold separately. This 15-week programme is primarily a substantive immigration-law training course. If you want focused MCQ practice, timed revision or exam-intensive preparation, choose one of our separate exam-preparation products.
Before you enrol
IAA Level 1 Registration & Assessment: What Learners Should Know
Training is one part of becoming authorised; the IAA sets the registration, experience and competence-assessment requirements.
Experience normally expected
Current IAA guidance says Level 1 advisers should normally have at least three months' full-time (or equivalent part-time) UK immigration advice/services experience, or six months' full-time (or equivalent part-time) non-immigration advice-giving experience, alongside up-to-date immigration-law training.
Assessment format
The current Level 1 competence assessment has two sections: 20 multiple-choice questions and scenario-based questions requiring written answers. Both sections must be passed.
Pass mark and attempt
The current Level 1 pass mark is 60%. The IAA allows one competence-assessment attempt per application, so candidates should prepare thoroughly before submitting an application for registration.
Online assessment
IAA competence assessments are currently conducted online. The Level 1 immigration paper is timed and the regulator provides onboarding and assessment instructions directly to eligible applicants.

When are the next IAA Level 1 instructor-led training intakes?
The currently listed live online intakes start on 27 October 2026, 12 January 2027 and 13 April 2027. Each intake follows the same 15-week instructor-led course structure.
How much does the IAA Level 1 instructor-led course cost?
The course fee is £999 for each currently listed intake. IAA registration, competence-assessment fees and separate exam-practice products are not included unless expressly stated.
Do I need legal experience to take this IAA Level 1 course?
No law degree is required to attend. The course is suitable for beginners and for learners with some existing legal, advice, HR, charity or immigration experience. The IAA's separate registration requirements should be checked before applying for authorisation.
Will this training make me an IAA-authorised immigration adviser?
No. Training is only one part of the regulatory journey. You must meet the IAA's applicable registration, experience and competence requirements and receive formal authorisation before providing regulated immigration advice.
Does this course include the IAA Level 1 competence assessment?
No. The official competence assessment is administered by the Immigration Advice Authority as part of its registration process. This course does not book or administer the official assessment.
Does the course include MCQ exam practice or a mock exam?
No dedicated exam-practice package or full mock exam is included in this instructor-led course. Immigration Visa Expert offers a separate 500+ MCQ practice product and separate exam-preparation training.
Can I take the IAA Level 1 course from outside the UK?
Yes. The course is delivered live online. Overseas learners should ensure they can attend sessions scheduled in UK time and understand that the course focuses on UK immigration law.
What topics are covered in IAA Level 1 training?
The programme covers core Level 1 areas including the Immigration Rules, visitors, family migration, work and study routes, settlement, EU Settlement Scheme, British nationality, asylum and protection, refusals and remedies, ethics, client care and practical legal research skills.
How much study should I do outside the live sessions?
