Eligibility Criteria for Student Visa Application

Minimum required qualification criteria for UK Student Visa Application

  • Have an offer of a place on a course at a UK educational institution that is licensed student sponsor
  • Meet the English language proficiency requirement
  • Have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses to support yourself during your time in the UK
  • Be able to prove that you intend to leave the UK after your studies have finished.

What is a “Course Offer” to apply for UK Student Visa Application?

  • To apply for a UK Student Visa, you must first secure an unconditional offer to study at an educational institution approved as a licensed student sponsor. This educational institution will provide you with a unique reference number known as a “Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies” (CAS) once they have formally accepted you into the course. It’s crucial to note that you need this CAS before you can proceed with your visa application.

Understand types of “Eligible Courses” for UK Student Visa Application

  • Under the UK Student Visa category, you have the flexibility to enrol in a variety of courses, including:
  • Full-time courses leading to qualifications below degree level (RQF level 3, 4, or 5), with a minimum of 15 hours of organized daytime study per week.
  • Full-time courses leading to degree-level qualifications (RQF level 6, 7, or 8).
  • Full-time courses at degree level or above (RQF level 6, 7, or 8) that are equivalent to UK higher education courses and form part of an extended overseas program.
  • Part-time courses leading to qualifications above degree level (RQF level 7 or above).
  • Recognized foundation programs for postgraduate doctors or dentists.
  • English language courses at level B2 or higher in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
  • You can also apply for a UK Student Visa if you are taking up a full-time elected position as a Student Union Sabbatical Officer.
  • In some cases, if you are studying or conducting research on sensitive subjects at RQF level 7 or above, you may need to obtain an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate.

What is the importance of “Confirmation of Acceptance (CAS)” for Student Visa Applications?

  • Upon receiving an offer of admission, your chosen educational institution will provide you with a CAS reference number. This reference number is essential and must be included in your visa application.
  • It’s important to note that you must apply for your student visa within 6 months from the date of receiving your CAS.
  • This information outlines the key requirements and details for obtaining a UK Student Visa, ensuring that prospective students understand the necessary steps and criteria involved in pursuing education in the UK. It’s important to note that specific requirements can vary based on individual circumstances.

Extending your Student Visa:

  • To extend your current Student Visa while you are in the UK, you need to meet certain key conditions and criteria
  • Course Enrolment: You must continue to be enrolled and actively participating in a course of study with a licensed student sponsor in the UK. Your course should meet the eligibility requirements for a Student Visa extension.
  • Academic Progress: You must demonstrate that you are making satisfactory academic progress in your course. This can involve maintaining a certain level of attendance, completing coursework, and achieving passing grades or academic milestones.
  • Funds for Maintenance: You must have sufficient funds to cover your living costs and tuition fees for the duration of the extended visa. The specific financial requirements can vary depending on your circumstances and the duration of the extension.
  • Valid CAS: You may need to obtain a new Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your institution if your extension is for a new course or if your previous CAS has expired.
  • English Language Proficiency: If your course requires English language proficiency and you haven’t already provided evidence of this in your initial visa application, you may need to prove your English language skills.
  • Compliance with Immigration Rules: You must continue to comply with all UK immigration rules and regulations throughout your stay.
  • Financial Documentation: You will need to provide financial documents to demonstrate that you can financially support yourself during the extended stay. This may include bank statements, sponsorship letters, or scholarship award letters.
  • Biometric Information: You may be required to provide biometric data (fingerprints and photographs) as part of the application process.
  • Healthcare Surcharge: You will need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge as part of your application to access healthcare services provided by the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK.
  • Dependant’s Visa: Importantly, if you wish to extend your visa, your partner’s or child’s visa will not automatically renew along with yours. Their visa will remain valid until its original expiry date. To ensure their status remains uninterrupted, they can either apply for an extension simultaneously with you or independently before their visa expires.
  • It’s crucial to check the specific requirements and conditions for extending your Student Visa on the official UK government website or consult with a qualified immigration advisor for the most up-to-date and accurate information. Additionally, ensure that you submit your extension application well before your current visa expires to maintain lawful status in the UK.
